Data Bundle Not Working in Afghanistan? 9 Fixes

5 min read By Admin

If you sent a data bundle to Afghanistan and the internet still does not work, the cause is almost always on the phone, not the bundle: mobile data is switched off, the phone needs a restart, or Wi-Fi or airplane mode is getting in the way. Work through the checks below in order — most problems are fixed in the first three steps, and none of them cost anything.

1. Check the order went through

Before changing anything on the phone, confirm the bundle was actually sent:

  • Sign in to your TopUpAFG account and check the order status. Delivered means the bundle was sent to the operator.
  • Make sure it went to the right number and right network — a bundle only works on the network it belongs to, so an ATOMA bundle cannot work on an AWCC SIM.
  • Give it a few minutes. Activation is usually quick, but operators sometimes take a little longer at busy times.

2. Make sure mobile data is switched on

It sounds obvious, but it is the most common cause. On the phone in Afghanistan:

  • Android: swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Mobile data so it is on, or go to Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network.
  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular) → turn on Mobile Data.

If the phone has two SIMs, check that mobile data is set to the SIM that received the bundle. Dual-SIM phones often use the other SIM for data by default.

3. Restart the phone (or use airplane mode)

Turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then off, or switch the phone off and on again. This makes the phone reconnect to the network and pick up the new bundle. It fixes a surprising number of problems.

4. Turn off Wi-Fi to test

If the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network that has no internet, it may not use mobile data at all. Turn Wi-Fi off and try opening a website or WhatsApp.

5. Check for signal and the right network type

Look at the top of the screen: there should be signal bars and a 4G, 3G or H symbol. If there is no data symbol, they may be in an area with weak coverage — try moving to a window, outdoors or higher ground. Coverage can vary a lot between cities and villages and between networks.

6. Check the bundle has not run out or expired

Bundles have a size and a validity — for example 1 GB for 24 hours or 13 GB for 30 days. If a 24-hour or hourly pack was sent, it may simply have expired. Some bundles, like night packages, only work at certain hours. Check which bundle was sent in the order details.

To see how much data the phone has used, open Settings → Data usage on Android or Settings → Mobile Data on iPhone.

7. Turn off VPNs and data-saving restrictions

A VPN app, a "Private DNS" setting or a strict Data Saver mode can block apps from using the connection. Switch them off temporarily to test.

8. Check the internet (APN) settings

If nothing else works, the phone's internet settings may be wrong — this sometimes happens after moving a SIM to a new phone.

  • Android: Settings → Mobile network → Access Point Names → menu → Reset to default.
  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Network.

Most phones set this automatically. If resetting does not help, the operator can send the correct settings — they can call the operator's customer service from the same SIM.

9. Take the SIM out and put it back

Switch the phone off, remove the SIM card, wait a minute, put it back and switch on. This can clear a connection fault.

Still not working? Contact us

If the order shows delivered and none of the steps above helped, contact TopUpAFG support with:

  • your order reference (it starts with TUA-),
  • the number the bundle was sent to,
  • what happens on the phone (no signal, no data symbol, a message from the operator, etc.).

We will check the bundle with the operator. If you have not ordered yet, see how to send a data bundle to Afghanistan.

How to avoid problems next time

  • Double-check the number before paying — the network is detected from the first digits (see Afghan mobile network prefixes).
  • Choose the right length. Hourly and 24-hour packs expire quickly; for everyday use send a 30-day bundle. Our guide to how much data a family needs per month helps you pick the size.
  • Tell them a bundle is coming, so they know to turn on mobile data and check the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my data bundle not working in Afghanistan?

Most often mobile data is switched off, the phone is set to use the other SIM for data, or the phone needs a restart. Less often the bundle has expired or the APN settings are wrong.

How long does a data bundle take to activate?

Usually a few minutes after payment. If it has been more than an hour and the internet still does not work after the steps above, contact support with your order reference.

I sent the bundle to the wrong number. What can I do?

Contact support straight away with the order reference and the correct number. Whether it can be reversed depends on the operator and whether the bundle has already been used.

Can a data bundle work on a different network?

No. An ATOMA bundle only works on an ATOMA SIM, an Etisalat bundle on an Etisalat SIM, and so on. TopUpAFG only shows bundles for the network of the number you enter.

Do night packages work during the day?

No. Night packages can only be used during the operator's night hours. For daytime use, send a regular bundle.

Send a bundle with confidence

On TopUpAFG the network is detected from the number, only matching bundles are shown, and the full price is clear before you pay. See all prices in our ATOMA internet packages guide or compare networks in which Afghan network has the best data deals.
