USSD codes are the short codes that start with * and end with #, and they let you check your balance, buy data and reach network menus without using the internet. Each Afghan network has its own set. This page lists the ones you are most likely to need on ATOMA, AWCC, Etisalat, Roshan and Salaam, so you can copy the right one instead of searching.
Tap Copy next to any code, then paste it into the phone app. On an Android phone you can also tap Dial, or Text for an SMS code. iPhones do not allow websites to dial these codes, so on an iPhone tap Copy, open Phone, paste, and press call.
Key takeaways
- USSD codes work without internet, so they still work when your data has run out.
- Each code works only on its own network.
- Etisalat mainly uses SMS codes to 3378, and Roshan mainly uses its app or SMS to 555.
- Never enter a mobile money PIN because a stranger told you to dial something.

Bundle codes come from each operator's own website, checked on 1 November 2026: ATOMA, AWCC, Etisalat and Salaam. Main-balance codes and the AWCC, Roshan and Salaam help numbers come from independent guides, so treat those as a good starting point. Operators change codes and prices, so if a code fails, ask the network's help line.
What is a USSD code?
A USSD code is a direct message between your phone and your network. You dial it like a phone number, and the network answers on screen a moment later. It needs no data connection and no app, and it works on the most basic phone.
That is why these codes matter in Afghanistan. When your data bundle has run out, the app you would normally use to check it stops working too. A USSD code still gets through, as long as you have mobile signal.
Some codes do one thing, such as showing your balance. Others open a menu, and you reply with a number to move through it. ATOMA's *344#Dial works this way: you dial it, and replying 7 shows your remaining data.
How to dial a USSD code
- Open your phone's dialler, the same screen you use to make a call.
- Type the code, including the * and the #.
- Press call.
- Read the reply on screen. If a menu appears, type the number you want and press send.
On a dual-SIM phone, the phone may ask which SIM to use. Choose the SIM on the network the code belongs to, because a code sent through the wrong SIM will fail.
ATOMA USSD codes
ATOMA, the network formerly called MTN Afghanistan, runs most of its data services from two menus. These come from ATOMA's own bundle pages.
| What it does | Code |
|---|---|
| Open the data bundle menu | *344#Dial |
| Open the wider bundle menu | *247#Dial |
| Buy a daily 1 GB bundle | *344*14#Dial |
| Buy a weekly 3 GB bundle | *344*24#Dial |
| Buy a monthly 5 GB bundle | *344*53#Dial |
| Buy a monthly 10 GB bundle | *344*33#Dial |
| Cancel a data bundle | *344*8#Dial |
| Open ATOMA Pay mobile money | *222#Dial |
| Check airtime balance | *310#Dial |
ATOMA Pay needs your own PIN. Only use that menu yourself, and keep the PIN private.
AWCC USSD codes
AWCC gives each bundle its own code in the same pattern: 477, then a bundle number, then 1 to activate or 4 to check it. The full list is in our guide to activating a data bundle.
| What it does | Code |
|---|---|
| Buy a daily 1 GB bundle | *477*50*1#Dial |
| Check that daily 1 GB bundle | *477*50*4#Dial |
| Buy a weekly 5 GB bundle | *477*275*1#Dial |
| Buy a monthly 10 GB bundle | *477*550*1#Dial |
| Buy a Friday 3 GB bundle | *477*90*1#Dial |
| Check main balance | *123#Dial |
Etisalat codes
Etisalat handles bundles by SMS. You send a short word to 3378, and to cancel you put PU in front of it.
| What it does | Code |
|---|---|
| Buy a daily 1 GB bundle | D50 to 3378Text |
| Buy a weekly 3 GB bundle | W199 to 3378Text |
| Buy a monthly 8 GB bundle | 8GB to 3378Text |
| Cancel that monthly bundle | PU 8GB to 3378Text |
| Check your bundle | 505 to 606Text |
| Check main balance | *123#Dial |
Etisalat also lists its 888 service for bundles, and you can call 888 to speak to someone.
Roshan codes
| What you want to do | How to do it on Roshan |
|---|---|
| See current bundles and subscribe | Open the My Roshan app |
| Subscribe by SMS | Text the bundle's code to 555 (codes are listed in the bundles section of roshan.af) |
| See remaining data | Open the My Roshan app dashboard |
| Main balance | *444#Dial |
| Help from a person | Call 333 |
Roshan's website does not publish its bundle codes in a form we could check, and the lists on other websites disagree with the prices Roshan shows today. So we are not printing bundle-by-bundle codes here, because a wrong code could buy the wrong bundle. The app and 333 always give the current one.
Salaam USSD codes
Salaam's bundle codes follow a pattern too: 740, then a bundle number, then 1 to activate or 2 to ask about it.
| What it does | Code |
|---|---|
| Buy a daily 1 GB bundle | *740*12*1#Dial |
| Ask about that bundle | *740*12*2#Dial |
| Buy a monthly 5 GB bundle | *740*5*1#Dial |
| Buy a monthly 10 GB bundle | *740*10*1#Dial |
| Check main balance | *888#Dial |
When a USSD code fails
Most failures have a simple cause.
- "Connection problem" or "invalid MMI code". The code was mistyped, or it belongs to another network. Check the SIM, and copy the code rather than retyping it.
- No reply at all. The network may be busy, or the signal is weak. Wait a minute and try again.
- Insufficient balance. The bundle costs more than you have. Add airtime, then dial again.
- The code used to work. Operators do retire codes. Call the help line in the table, or open the network's app.
How to stay safe with USSD codes
Most of these codes are harmless, but some are not. A code can move money from a mobile wallet, and a stranger on the phone might try to talk you through one.
- Do not dial a code someone sends you unless you know what it does.
- Never share a mobile money PIN or a one-time code, even with someone who claims to work for your network.
- Check the amount before confirming any payment on screen.

Frequently asked questions
Do USSD codes need internet?
No. They use the normal mobile network, so they work with no data bundle at all. You only need signal, which is why they are so useful when your data has run out.
Do USSD codes cost money?
Checking a balance is normally free, but a code that buys a bundle takes the bundle's price from your airtime. Read the on-screen message before you confirm anything.
Why does a code from an old list not work?
Operators change their codes, and many lists online are years old. ATOMA also took over from MTN Afghanistan, so older pages may use outdated details. Trust the network's own website or help line over an old list.
Can I use these codes from outside Afghanistan?
They are meant for an Afghan SIM on an Afghan network. If you are abroad and want to help family, it is simpler to send airtime or a bundle to their number from any top-up site.
